The take-up of broadband internet access is increasing rapidly throughout the UK and this is partly due
to the cheaper monthly subscription packages on offer and the much faster download speeds that are now available.
You can now subscribe to a broadband package that costs about the same as an anytime dial-up package cost just
a year ago. Of course, one big advantage of broadband is that you can be online and use your home phone
at the same time.
With broadband you can do things far quicker: surf the net, email photos, download music tracks, video clips and software updates,
work from home (connecting to your office network via a VPN), use webcams,
play online gaming and listen to online radio. You might choose to set up
your own network at home and share your more powerful broadband internet
connection between two or more computers. As you'll probably be online
more, you should ensure that your
anti-virus and security software is up-to-date.
Depending upon your telephone line, available speeds include 512K, 1MB, 2MB
and higher. Your phone line is tested by BT when
you apply for broadband access or a broadband speed upgrade to determine if
the selected speed is suitable on your line. This work is carried out at the
local exchange so you don't have to stay in and wait for an engineer to call
at your home. All the service providers let you type in your home phone
number in order to perform an initial broadband availability check.
How Can I Compare Broadband Deals?
We've detailed several UK broadband internet service providers (ISP's) in
our directory - please feel free to browse them using the navigation bar on
the left of this page. You can quickly read and compare the different features of the subscription packages listed.
A number of offers include free connection and a free (necessary) broadband modem.
You can also choose a package that offers email addresses, parental controls
and email virus protection. Don't forget that you can get free, access
anywhere, email addresses from various providers - so don't worry too much
about the number of email accounts a particular broadband package includes.
If you do find it too hard to compare all the different packages on offer
then why not let uswitch.com do the hard work for you? After completing a
few simple questions on their easy to use website, they'll compare all the
packages for free and find the best deal for you - try it here.
Monthly Usage Limits
A number of the broadband packages have capped monthly usage limits that vary between 1GB/month to
15GB/month or more. Unlimited usage packages are also available. BT suggest
that with 1GB/month you should expect to be able
to surf the internet for about 2 hours a day, send and receive about 50 photos a week via email, download a couple of
5 minute video clips,
download 5 music tracks and listen to online radio for 2 hours a week.
15GB/month allows approximately all of the following: surfing the net for
15 hours a day, sending and receiving 500 photos by email each week,
downloading 250 music tracks a week, downloading 3 hours of video clips a
week, listening to online radio for 15 hours a week and sending and
receiving 6,000 emails a week with no attachments.
You should expect to pay an additional fee (per GB) in any month where
you exceed your usage allowance. This additional fee varies from provider to
provider.
