Online Banking Continues To Grow

According to the latest figures from the banking payments association Apacs, the use of UK internet banking has grown by 174% in the past five years. In 2006, a total of 17 million people used online banking services compared to only 6.2 million in 2001.

Happy Banking Returns

Its internet banking 10th birthday this week. Nationwide Building Society was the first UK finance organisation to offer an internet service on May 27, 1997. Hot on their heels was Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) who launched their internet bank facilities the month after.

Cash machines and ill winds

Following on from unlikely corporate excuses like leaves on the line, the wrong type of rain and the like, Halifax came up with a corker last week.

Last Thursday, people using some Halifax cash machines had their cards swallowed by the hole in the wall machine due to a technical glitch. Upon contacting a presumably busy customer helpline they were told that was all down to the strong wind conditions.

An official spokesperson subsequently confirmed that the wind wasn't really the cause, it was just an off the cuff remark from a call centre operative that spread rapidly.
